Hi, friends! As I am sure you know by now, on Thursday night, the fabulous Caitlin Clark of the Iowa Hawkeyes passed Kelsey Plum to become the all-time scorer in NCAA Division I women’s basketball history.

She did so in front of an electric, sold-out crowd at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, passing Plum’s mark with a signature from-the-logo three-pointer early in the first quarter on her way to setting an Iowa single-game scoring record with 49 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists in a 106-89 conference win over Michigan. It was all pretty incredible.

Clark deserves all the praise she is getting. But it’s also important to note — as we have pointed out here at Power Plays before — that women’s sports aren’t exactly the best at keeping stats and tracking records.

Believe it or not, there are actually two women who have scored more collegiate points than Caitlin Clark: Lynette Woodard (3,649) and Pearl Moore (4,061). Both played in the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) era of women’s sports.

I’m far from the first person to bring up their records this week, but in true Power Plays style, I thought it would be fun to look back through the newspaper archives at the coverage of these two women when they were in their prime.

Come and join me on a trip through women’s basketball history.
