Let's try this again
Power Plays is relaunching. So is Burn It All Down. Here's how you can help.
Hi, friends.
Goodness, I’m giddy just typing those words. It has been way, way too long, and I know that right now, most of you are thinking this:
And I do, in fact, have explaining to do! And I promise, I will. But today, I just want to re-establish contact and make two exciting announcements.
The first is that Power Plays is officially relaunching next week. This relaunch involves a full brand refresh (CANNOT WAIT FOR YOU TO SEE IT), a platform move, and lots of great writing about women’s sports.
For the Power Plays relaunch, I do not need you to do anything. All payments are on pause and will be for some time — I owe you all so many newsletters, and I am more prepared than I ever have been to deliver them. I will send another email with all of the details later this week, I promise, but first I want to get to the second announcement.
***Drumroll Please***
BURN IT ALL DOWN IS COMING BACK TOO!!!
If you’re new here, Burn It All Down is the feminist sports podcast I launched and co-hosted with the brilliant Dr. Amira Rose Davis, Dr. Jessica Luther, Dr. Brenda Elsey, and Shireen Ahmed way back in 2017. We produced weekly episodes from 2017 to 2022 before taking a hiatus in large part because the podcast had become financially unsustainable.
I know that many of you found Power Plays because of Burn It All Down, and as much as I love this newsletter, I think BIAD is probably the most important work I’ve ever done and ever will do. It’s also some of the most fun work I do, because it involves community, and these days, I need that community more than ever, and I don’t think I’m alone in that.
In order to get BIAD officially back without burning out (pun intended) before we can really get going, we’ve launched a Kickstarter — which is basically a GoFundMe — and set a minimum goal of $10,000.
The response so far has been incredible, but it is really important that we surpass that initial goal quickly so we can stay in the good graces of the algorithm and continue to raise additional funding. (And, it turns out, independent progressive sports media needs all the algorithm help it can get.)
I know times are tight right now, but contributing $2 or simply sharing the Kickstarter link with your friends and family will help us out so much.
And if you’re able to help today, you will have an exponential impact.
So, so much has changed in my life over the past year, and it has taken me a while to find my footing. But I’m firmly planted now, and while I didn’t plan to be relaunching Power Plays and Burn It All Down at the same time, adding them both back into my life at this moment is … well, I’m honestly struggling to come up with a single word to describe how I’m feeling right now. But I do know that I’m overcome with gratitude.
I will be back in your inboxes later this week with more information on the Power Plays relaunch. Stay tuned.
And if this email has made you crave some Burn It All Down, I have good news for you: We already put together a few episodes to coincide with the Kickstarter launch. Here’s the first part of our Olympics preview, which you can watch on YouTube or listen to on your podcast platform of choice.
Thank you for still being here. I’m so excited for what’s to come.

Love the transparancy around making BIAD sustainable this time around. The Kickstarter model is actually brilliant for indpendent media since it frontloads revenue and proves demand before committing resources. I remember when my former podcast died from similiar funding issues and we never thought to try crowdfunding first. Community-backed media really is the future for niche but critical coverage like feminist sports journalism.
I’m so excited for your relaunch of both Power Plays and BIAD! Congrats. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
