Since starting Power Plays, one of the things I have been most excited about is how many hard-core fans of disparate women’s sports have come together.
But there’s one question I get from everyone: Where else can I go for women’s sports coverage? My goal is to have a master list that I can provide to people whenever that questions comes up in the future. But I can’t do it alone.
So, please, use this thread to tell me: Where do you go for women’s sports coverage? Which writers do you follow on twitter to keep you up-to-date? Which organizations are doing great things in the world of women’s sports to make them more visible? Which podcasts do you listen to? Which websites are regularly good?
I want this list to include reps from all women’s sports, U.S. and international, mainstream and under-the-radar, team and individual, pro and amateur. I want to highlight the hard-hitting reporters, the analysts, the podcasters, the content creators, all of it.
(Geno Auriemma, Teresa Witherspoon, and Robin Roberts would LOVE to have had this info back in 1998, at this exo game between UConn and the New York Liberty. CREDIT: Getty Images.)
Here’s the info that would be helpful to include, so that this thread is functional:
The name of the person/publication/org/etc
What sport(s) they cover
Why you like their coverage
and PLEASE include hyperlinks to the podcasts, twitter profiles, instagram accts, etc.
This is also a chance to tell us what you all are working on. I know there are so many of you doing amazing things in this arena, and I want to know more, and how I can better support you.
(Oh, and your rec doesn’t have to be solely media based — if there’s something tangentially related to media coverage in women’s sports that you think everyone should know about, please include that, too!)
I’ll be in and out this afternoon adding my own recs. I’m very excited about this.
We have regular coverage of women's professional hockey (both the NWHL & PWHPA), women's college hockey, basketball, soccer, etc. as well as features from time-to-time. We're completely reader-supported (no ads)!
Podcast - The Cheryl Reeve Show. Local reporter interviews MN Lynx Coach Cheryl Reeve about the Lynx, WNBA, US Women’s National team and at times social issues. https://talknorth.com/thecherylreeveshow/
Check out Just Women's Sports! Their IG keeps me posted on all the highlights I need to see (and I love their account takeovers!), and their newsletter gives me a more in-depth recap of what's happening in sports.
- The Rugby Breakdown https://www.therugbybreakdown.com/ Covers girls and women's US Rugby This is a one-woman show and it is extremely well-done
- Goff Rugby Report https://www.goffrugbyreport.com/ Covers high school and college rugby. This is not only for women's rugby, but there is equal time
- The Racquet Magazine Podcast https://racquetmag.com/podcast/ hosted by Rennae Stubbs and covers Women's and Men's tennis, but because Rennae is the host it really comes from a women's POV
On twitter: -
@alexaphilippou -covers UCONN Women's basketball, CT Sun Basketball, and other women's sports in the CT area for the Hartford Courant
@darcymaine_espn - covers CT area sports for the most part although she just covered Australian Open tennis excellently
@rebeccalobo - women's professional and NCAA basketball (obviously :-) )
I am biased, but the work we do at The IX Newsletter -- Annie Peterson, Joey Dillon, myself, Carly Grenfell and Erica Ayala, on soccer/tennis/basketball/golf/hockey every weekday -- is vital infrastructure, and pathway to so many others doing great work. https://theix.substack.com/
WNBA, in no particular order: Rachel Gall (@RachGall),; WNBAInsider (Gabe Ibrahim); High Post Hoops (Howard Megdal); The Athletic; Dorothy Gentry (The Athletic); Matt Ellentuck/SB Nation (I'm not a Washington Mystics fan, but he does good coverage); Around the Rim podcast (LaChina Robinson); Between Two Birds podcast (hosted by Sue Bird of the Seattle Storm) Mirin Fader for in-depth profiles on Bleacher Report; Hashtag Basketballl for weekly WNBA power rankings.
NCAAW hoops: depends on the team/conference/area. Local newspapers tend to do good coverage of good local teams (e.g., The Courant does good coverage of UConn and The Statesman covers the SC Gamecocks WBB very well).
Almost everyone I follow is tangentially related to the Burn It All Down crew or The Athletic WNBA writers (so Lindsay already knows about them!), so I'll shout out a few others:
Deanna Hong, an Emmy-award winning videographer who does amazing work with UCLA gymnastics and also was part of the Women's World Cup production crew: https://deannahong.com/
I follow a lot of skiing and snowboarding, which is hard to find on mainstream cable, so I follow livescoring (and stream when able) on https://twitter.com/FISfreestyle and https://www.fis-ski.com/ They also have an app which I'm new to but seems to be working well so far.
And we're beefing up our original women's sports coverage (slowly but surely!) at Yahoo Sports. For hoops seasons, alert notifications are the best way to go.
Yup, just via the phone app. The web landing page can get cluttered, whereas our alerts team alerts all our original stuff and any game alerts you want.
JWS runs an incredible Instagram page and newsletter! Great highlights, deeper stories, account takeovers with really interesting personalities and insights! I've really felt I know these athletes on a deeper level after becoming part of the JWS community! Cannot recommend them more :)
I photograph Irish women’s soccer as a volunteer to help promote the game here. I make all my photos available for free on Twitter @mickoshea100 and Insta @womenssoccerphotos.
After becoming a women's soccer fan, I've delved back into becoming a non-participant fan of lacrosse and with the college season starting up, I haven't had a chance to learn as much about in-depth reporting on women's lax but:
are the premiere lacrosse publications for both men and women. (Sadly, I haven't been able to find many places with the sole focus on the women's side.)
and am eager to watch the Women's Professional Lacrosse League (WPLL) in its upcoming third year when it overlaps with the NWSL season. Also, when I've researched it (around the time the NWSLPA made moves by facilitating the growth of player salaries), WPLL players are paid nothing to play pro, to my knowledge.
-Currently I am working on a new Instagram account called "Revolutionary Heroines IX"
It's in it's infancy, but it's a space to celebrate diversity, inclusivity, and equality. Recognizing and strengthening the visibility of women who challenge the status quo. https://www.instagram.com/revolutionary_heroinesix/?hl=en
Shoutout to Backline podcasts (123rd minute and Attacking Half) - those are my favorite soccer podcasts to listen to, as well as the archive of Soccer Made in Portland (sadly in off season limbo as the PTFC beat writer for The Oregonian, Jamie Goldberg, has moved on to the NBA)
Mine are not full-time news sources, but cool people to follow if you want to see the growth of women's wrestling:
Sally Roberts, the founder of Wrestle Like a Girl, which is pushing for women's wrestling to become a NCAA-recognized sport. She and her organization share a ton of links about the movement to get athletic scholarships for women wrestlers and get more girls into the sport. (https://twitter.com/wrstlelikeagirl and https://twitter.com/wrestlingsally)
And a hat tip to my friend Shannon Scovel (https://twitter.com/ShannonScovel), who is currently a PhD student at the University of Maryland focused on sports media and gender. She currently covers wrestling for NCAA.com, has conducted research on women's wrestling and has made me way more interested in it.
Ultiworld (https://ultiworld.com/) does a good (and ever-improving) job of covering women's ultimate at the college, club, and semi-pro levels. They had a program last summer to help develop female journalists also.
The Premier Ultimate League (https://www.premierultimateleague.com/) is the first semi-pro womxn's ultimate league, and also publishes articles about their league and games.
I watch ESPN for women's basketball (WNBA and college). Podcasts I listen to include Ball + Chain so I can listen to Rebecca Lobo, Burn It All Down (of course!), She Explores, Work, Play, Love (which is where i heard about Burn It All Down from Lauren Fleshman), IronWomen and The Outspoken Cyclist.
A lot of my favourites are already listed so I'll stick with some new ones:
Honestly The Guardian and Telegraph in the UK are doing a great job covering women's sports (and are everything I hope big media companies in North America will eventually be)
SheIS supports domestic women's leagues and keeps track of all games of every sport in one handy calendar on their website (https://www.Sheissport.com/ and @TeamSheIS on IG/TW)
And I do freelance graphic design/digital illustrations dedicated to female athletes since we don't have nearly enough fun illustrations or animations compared to the men. I also organize watch parties in Toronto for NWSL/FA WSL/Canada's WNT to get new fans into women's soccer, so hit me up if you're from TO! All that is at @fc.mingo.graphics on IG : )
Hi, I recently started a podcast about the 150 year history of women playing soccer/football. The most recent episode covers the biggest women's match ever, the final of the 1971 Women's World Cup.
It's called The Forgotten XI: The Hidden History of Women's Football.
Besides High Post Hoops, Swish Appeal is one of my go to's with Tamrynn Spruill and her crew. Cat Ariail with Swish Appeal does some great pieces on sports culture.
Also keen to hear from writers who want to pitch to us, we publish women’s sport content everyday, and in a 12 page special supplement once a month.
All content is open access!
Loads of great writers for us including @katiewhyatt (women’s football)
@molly_mcelwee
@fi_tomas_
@KateLouiseRowan (rugby)
@fadumo_oo (on social)
@pippafield23
All my US faves are already on here, but just to add that I learn a lot from the sportswriting on your side of the pond and am grateful and inspired by seeing such a strong community there. With a special thanks to Shireen Ahmed through whose twitter feed I discovered so many of you.
They recently announced an indefinite hiatus due to lack of sponsorship but while looking for the link I saw the news that they were picked up by Football Manager through the end of the season, so they'll be keeping current with the WSL.
I also subscribed to The Athletic solely for Meg Linehan's woso coverage but have recently gotten into their WNBA and women's NCAA coverage as well.
I imagine most people on here are at least aware of Burn It All Down, your pod, but it is really good and there is nothing else like it out there. So glad I got to go to a live show :)
I'd love any recs for women's motocross coverage??? I also would LOVE someone to do a deep dive into the motocross/Supercross culture regarding gender: sexy-dressed trophy girls, efforts (or lack thereof) to promote/grow women's racing, Toyota's #Makeuptomud campaign (eye roll at the name).
Also, professional women's (american) football coverage???
Also The Fearless Coach, Becky Carlson, writes/speaks about issues related to coaching, specifically women in college coaching. She can be found on LinkedIn, Facebook, Anchor.fm, and her website.
In terms of talking about what we're working on, I write a couple things every week for Dave Campbell's Texas Basketball about Division I women's college basketball in the state of Texas. Usually a game preview + a more in-depth piece analyzing something that's happening in the state. (I'm on Twitter at @juscarts): https://www.texasbasketball.com/?ref=txfb
In terms of other people, I love the work @hoptine is doing covering women's bball for Forbes, the work that @alexaphilippou does covering UConn, @ClassicJpow's New York Liberty coverage, & @NatalieHeavren's Connecticut Sun coverage.
Okay, I have to run out to lunch so my first entry will be very short, but to get us going:
-The Equalizer for the most in-depth women's soccer coverage (https://equalizersoccer.com/ and https://twitter.com/EqualizerSoccer)

Offside Rule WSL Edition: https://offsiderulepodcast.com/tag/the-offside-rule-wsl/
They recently announced an indefinite hiatus due to lack of sponsorship but while looking for the link I saw the news that they were picked up by Football Manager through the end of the season, so they'll be keeping current with the WSL.
I also subscribed to The Athletic solely for Meg Linehan's woso coverage but have recently gotten into their WNBA and women's NCAA coverage as well.
there's a burgeoning community of people doing European women's foot...eh, sorry, soccer
for England there's @lawson_sv https://twitter.com/lawson_sv @englionesses https://twitter.com/englionesses and @Suzy_Wrack https://twitter.com/SuzyWrack among others, for Germany there's @Ellen_Hanisch https://twitter.com/Ellen_Hanisch (some German but mostly English) and @JasSchweimler https://twitter.com/JasSchweimler (who had to quit her day job with the local paper so needs support)
Also the bring it all down crew and the IX but you know all about those already
I imagine most people on here are at least aware of Burn It All Down, your pod, but it is really good and there is nothing else like it out there. So glad I got to go to a live show :)
I'd love any recs for women's motocross coverage??? I also would LOVE someone to do a deep dive into the motocross/Supercross culture regarding gender: sexy-dressed trophy girls, efforts (or lack thereof) to promote/grow women's racing, Toyota's #Makeuptomud campaign (eye roll at the name).
Also, professional women's (american) football coverage???
hope requests/recs are ok!
Yes, requests are great -- I hope someone has some recs for you!

These are not as much news reporters, but tangential.
I follow Champion Women on Facebook. Nancy Hogsheads-Makar shares lots of articles. Learned a lot from her.
Sorry - posted before I was finished! Champion Women: https://www.facebook.com/iChampionWomen/
Also The Fearless Coach, Becky Carlson, writes/speaks about issues related to coaching, specifically women in college coaching. She can be found on LinkedIn, Facebook, Anchor.fm, and her website.
LadySwish does some really good work covering women's basketball in Virginia: http://ladyswishwbb.com/
A nerd after my own heart 🤓😍
